OTM Aaron Week 01: Moodboards & Concepts

This week I have spent the majority of my time working on mood boards and concepts as well as organizing asset lists and consulting with my the rest of my group.
Unfortunately I have been unable to attend lectures once again this week but this hasn't hindered my ability to complete work or communicate with my group.

I started the project off by creating some mood boards of assets I might have been interested in creating as well as some other assets that would be a general help to the group later down the line.
Our group decided to choose the theme of a Victorian theater and immediately imagined a ‘Phantom of the Opera’ type level and was inspired from the offset.

The theater would be the setting of a magic show so immediately I imagined a dim, Smoky room and a cloaked man with a spiked moustache.
Once I had some mood boards to work from I began by creating concepts for the theater chairs as I thought this would be a fun and no less important task for the project; after all the chairs will be dominating the level.
The idea of creating the chairs was something I wanted to do as soon as I was made aware of the theme and working on a prop that was both technical and stylish with a vintage feel but not too time consuming seemed like a breath of fresh air compared to projects I've been working on previously.

I'm excited for this project because instead of working on one asset over a long period we will be able to multitask on multiple assets or complete smaller assets more quickly and see more results as we go along; It's very taxing working on one asset over a long period and getting to work on smaller projects seems more engaging.

I began the chair concepts with silhouettes and slowly refined my designs until I could produce a line drawing that I could use as a basis for further design and experimentation. So far this week I have managed to produce a final concept of my folding chairs as well as a range of silhouettes and sketches leading up to that. As Well as my chair concepts I also got to work designing the larger interior and exterior doors.
I took inspiration from traditional upper class Victorian doors as well as more heavier, Gothic wrought iron decorated doors.
I think the combination of these two styles will produce something quite interesting possibly giving our Victorian theater a more sinister, Gothic, fantasy style.

Next week I hope to continue these concepts and further research the themes and aesthetics i’d like to portray for our project. By the end of next week i’d like to have a range of concepts and mood boards ready for the modelling phase as well as for the group to decide what room or props we would like to focus on so I can better fine tune my efforts when working on visual design and game production.

  1. Great concepts and renders!Unfortunate about the design change (level-wise), yet if we carry this language into the current level, it'll look great!
